The MG996R Continuous Rotation Servo Motor by Tower Pro is a robust and high-performance motor designed for applications that require full 360-degree movement rather than limited-angle positioning. Unlike standard servo motors that are restricted to a 0–180° rotation range, this version of the MG996R is modified for continuous rotation, allowing it to function more like a geared DC motor with directional control, while still being controlled via standard servo PWM signals.

One of its defining strengths is its high torque output, capable of delivering up to 11 kg·cm at 6V, making it suitable for driving wheels, mobile platforms, conveyor belts, and other mechanisms where power and durability are essential. Internally, it features full metal gears made from aluminum and brass, ensuring excellent mechanical strength, long service life, and resistance to wear and mechanical stress.

The motor is widely used in robotics, RC vehicles, automation systems, and DIY robotic projects, especially where rotation beyond 180° is required—such as for wheels or rotating platforms. It is easy to integrate with microcontrollers like Arduino or Raspberry Pi using a 3-wire interface: power, ground, and PWM signal.

The direction and speed of rotation are controlled by adjusting the PWM signal:

  • A signal around 1.5 ms stops the motor.
  • Less than 1.5 ms causes rotation in one direction.
  • More than 1.5 ms causes rotation in the opposite direction.
  • The farther from 1.5 ms, the faster the speed.

How PWM Control Works:

The servo expects a PWM signal with: Frequency: 50 Hz (1 cycle every 20 ms) – Pulse width (duration of HIGH signal) determines motion:
