The General Instrument 27C128 is a CMOS-based ultraviolet light erasable programmable read-only memory. With a total capacity of 128K bits, it is organized as 16,384 words by 8 bits, effectively functioning as a 16-kilobyte non-volatile storage device. This architecture allows it to store firmware or permanent data for a microprocessor-based system, holding its content without power.
The device is designed for fully static operation, requiring no clocks or refresh cycles, which simplifies its integration into a system. Accessing a byte of data, whether from a change in address or when the chip is enabled, is accomplished with high speed. The CMOS design is a key characteristic, enabling the chip to consume very little power, especially in standby mode where the current drops dramatically.
Data is written to the memory through an electrical programming process that requires a higher programming voltage on the Vpp pin. The stored data can be erased entirely by exposing the quartz window on the chip package to ultraviolet light, which resets all bits to a logical ‘1’ state. The chip includes control inputs for Chip Enable and Output Enable, allowing for easy connection to a system bus and preventing bus contention.
