The M27C512 is a 512 Kbit Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory (EPROM) integrated circuit, organized in a 65,536 x 8-bit structure. It is offered in two primary variants: an ultraviolet (UV) erasable version, which allows for multiple reprogramming cycles, and a One Time Programmable (OTP) version for permanent code storage. The device is designed to provide a reliable and flexible non-volatile memory solution for systems where fast development and code experimentation are critical.

The chip’s operation is managed through a two-line control system consisting of Chip Enable (E) and Output Enable (G). This architecture is ideal for use in larger memory arrays, as it minimizes power dissipation and prevents output bus contention. The M27C512 features a low-power CMOS standby mode, significantly reducing current consumption when the device is not selected. For programming, it utilizes a specialized algorithm and requires a specific programming voltage to write data into the memory cells.

The device is available in several packages, including the PDIP28 (Plastic Dual In-line Package) which is a through-hole design. The UV-erasable version comes in a ceramic package (FDIP28W) with a transparent window. Exposing this window to short-wave ultraviolet light erases the entire memory content, resetting all bits to a logical ‘1’ state and preparing the device for a new program cycle, a key feature for development and debugging.
