The 4N25 is a single-channel optoisolator that employs an infrared LED paired with a silicon phototransistor to transfer electrical signals while providing galvanic isolation. In this device, the LED emits photons when driven by an input current; these photons traverse an internal gap and strike the base emitter region of the phototransistor, producing a proportional collector current. This optical coupling ensures that high-voltage or noisy input circuits remain electrically separated from sensitive output circuitry, enhancing system reliability and safety.
Packaged in a compact 6-pin dual-in-line (DIP) format, the 4N25 features wide lead spacing for improved creepage distance and is also offered in surface-mount variants for high-density layouts. Internally, pins 1–2 connect to the infrared LED anode and cathode, while pins 4–5 serve as the emitter and collector of the output phototransistor (pin 6 is the base, typically left open). When an input current of up to 60 mA flows through the LED, the phototransistor switches on, allowing currents up to the device’s maximum collector-emitter rating of 80 V to pass.
Designed for harsh environments, the 4N25 withstands repetitive isolation tests at 5 kV rms and operates across –55 °C to +110 °C. Its robust construction meets UL, VDE, CSA, and multiple international approvals, making it ideal for industrial power-supply regulators, digital logic interfaces, and microprocessor signal isolation.
