The 74165 is a high-speed 8-bit parallel-in, serial-out shift register integrated circuit. Its primary function is to convert data from a parallel format into a serial data stream. The device features eight individual parallel data inputs (A through H), which allow an entire byte of data to be loaded into the register simultaneously. This loaded data is then shifted out bit-by-bit through a single serial output pin (QH) upon the application of clock pulses, effectively reducing the number of I/O lines required to read multiple digital signals.

The operation of the 74165 is governed by key control inputs. The Shift/Load (SH/LD) input is the master control; setting it low enables the parallel load function, latching the state of the eight data inputs into the internal registers. Setting SH/LD high enables the shifting mode. In this mode, data is shifted on the low-to-high transition of the clock, which can be applied to either the Clock (CLK) or the Clock Inhibit (CLKINH) pin, as their functions are interchangeable. A high level on CLKINH inhibits the clock, pausing the shifting operation.

The device is designed for versatility and ease of use in digital systems. It features a complementary serial output (QH‾) in addition to the standard output, providing design flexibility. With a wide operating voltage range, it is compatible with various logic levels. Furthermore, multiple 74165 ICs can be easily cascaded by connecting the serial output of one device to the serial input (SER) of the next, allowing for the input expansion to 16, 24, or more bits using only a few microcontroller pins.
