The fundamental operation of the chip is governed by a shared clock signal. The data presented at the inputs is not transferred to the outputs immediately. Instead, the capture occurs precisely at the moment the clock signal transitions from a low to a high voltage level, a mechanism known as positive-edge triggering. This synchronous operation ensures that all eight bits are latched simultaneously, preventing data instability and ensuring coherent system timing.

A key feature of the 74374 is its output control capability via a dedicated Output Enable pin. When this pin is activated, the outputs behave normally, driving the stored data onto the connected bus or lines. When it is deactivated, all eight outputs enter a high-impedance state. This effectively disconnects the chip from the circuit, allowing multiple devices to share the same bus lines without electrical conflict, which is essential for building bidirectional data paths and complex bus architectures.
