The primary component of this regulated power supply module circuit is the AMS1117 3.3, a positive voltage regulator integrated circuit (IC). This specific variant of the AMS1117 series is engineered to deliver a fixed output voltage of 3.3V. Its operation involves regulating the input voltage to maintain a constant output voltage.

When the circuit receives an input voltage exceeding the desired output (for example, 5V or 12V at 1A DC), ceramic capacitors are connected between the Vin pin and the GND (ground) pin of the IC. These capacitors help stabilize the input voltage and filter out noise or voltage fluctuations.

The voltage regulator AMS1117 IC then converts the input voltage to a steady +3.3V DC output. Any excess voltage above 3.3V is dissipated as heat through the circuit board. To ensure a stable and clean 3.3V DC output, additional ceramic capacitors are employed to further filter any residual noise from the output voltage. Moreover, a power-on indicator LED is connected between the Vout pin and ground via a series resistor. This configuration allows the LED to be powered by the regulated output voltage, providing a visual indication that the power supply is operational.

Warning:

The AMS1117 3.3V voltage regulator modules are rated for a maximum output current of 800mA. However, as a linear regulator rather than a switching converter, the module can generate significant heat when handling higher currents with a large voltage drop (the difference between input and output voltage).

This factor should be taken into account during circuit design. The module may not achieve the full 800mA output if the voltage differential between input and output exceeds a few volts.

The maximum available output current is also influenced by the input voltage; higher input voltages result in lower current capabilities.

For instance, using a 4.5V input voltage allows the regulator module to comfortably supply over 500mA, while an 11V input voltage reduces the available output current to 70mA, as illustrated in the graph below.
