The AT89C2051-24SU is a low-voltage, high-performance CMOS 8-bit microcontroller from Atmel’s 8051 family. It is built around a versatile 8-bit CPU that is fully compatible with the industry-standard MCS-51 instruction set, making it easy to program using a vast ecosystem of existing tools and code. The heart of the device is its 2KB of on-chip Flash programmable and erasable read-only memory (PEROM), which provides non-volatile storage for the application code and can be rewritten up to 10,000 times. This is complemented by 128 bytes of internal RAM for data manipulation during program execution.

This microcontroller is a highly integrated system-on-chip. It packs a significant number of on-chip peripherals to minimize external component count, including two 16-bit timer/counters, a full-duplex UART for serial communication, and a precision analog comparator. It offers 15 programmable I/O lines, with ports capable of directly driving LEDs. The inclusion of a six-interrupt source, two-level interrupt architecture allows it to respond promptly to external and internal events, which is crucial for real-time control applications.

The device is designed for a wide 4V to 6V operating range and can achieve a top clock frequency of 24 MHz, providing the necessary processing speed for many embedded tasks. It features fully static operation, allowing the clock to be slowed down to zero for ultra-low power consumption. To further conserve energy, it supports two software-selectable power-saving modes: Idle Mode, which halts the CPU while keeping peripherals active, and Power-down Mode, which freezes the oscillator, reducing power to a minimal level until the next hardware reset. It is housed in a compact SOIC-20 surface-mount package.
