E18-D80NK Photoelectric Switch Sensor (Proximity) 5V 3-80cm
The E18-D80NK is a compact infrared (IR) photoelectric proximity sensor designed to detect the presence of objects without physical contact. Inside its small cylindrical plastic housing resides both an IR LED emitter and a phototransistor receiver. The sensor emits invisible infrared light and listens for reflections: when an object enters its field of view and reflects the IR beam, the sensor’s electronics detect the return signal and trigger a digital output. This makes it a non-contact “switch,” ideal for automation tasks where mechanical contact would be undesirable or impractical.
What sets E18-D80NK apart is its adjustable detection range via a small onboard potentiometer, you can tune sensitivity to trigger from as close as ~3 cm out to about 80 cm. This adjustability, combined with a relatively narrow sensing angle and diffuse-reflective detection principle, enables more controlled and stable object detection even in environments with varying object types (opaque, translucent, differently colored, etc.). The module draws modest current and runs on standard 5 V logic, making it easy to integrate with microcontrollers and embedded systems.
Mechanically simple yet electrically robust, the E18-D80NK is widely used in robotics, automation, and obstacle detection from line-following robots to production-line sensing setups. Its compact form factor and three-wire output (power, ground, signal) mean you can mount it directly on a chassis or bracket and immediately connect to a controller. Because it relies on IR reflection, there is no need for a paired emitter/receiver set, simplifying design and reducing cost. All this makes the sensor a versatile and practical choice for projects requiring reliable proximity detection.
