The HW-437 USB ASP AVR Programmer is a compact, bus-powered device built around an ATmega8 microcontroller. Housed on a small PCB with only a handful of passive components, it connects directly to a computer’s USB port without requiring any special USB controller hardware. Its firmware-only USB driver architecture ensures broad compatibility, eliminating the need for proprietary interface chips or complex setup procedures.

Once connected, the HW-437 presents itself to the host as a simple in-circuit serial programmer. It uses a standard 10-pin ISP header fully conforming to the AVR ISP 10-pin pinout to link with target AVR microcontrollers. Two status LEDs provide at-a-glance feedback: one indicates power, the other signals active communication with the target device.

With built-in support for Windows (including Windows 8.1), Mac OS X, and Linux, the HW-437 can be driven by popular tools such as AVRDude. A software-controlled SCK line lets users program chips with very low clock speeds (< 1.5 MHz), while a maximum transfer rate of up to 5 kB/s keeps firmware uploads reasonably fast.
