The Kyoritsu KEW 5406A is a mains‑powered digital RCD (Residual Current Device) tester designed for rapid verification of protective devices in single‑phase 230 V AC or OLD‑TT systems. Instead of batteries, it draws test current directly from the circuit under test, ensuring uninterrupted operation. Five selectable test modes (×½, ×1, ×5, DC and Auto Ramp) allow checking that RCDs trip neither too readily nor too sluggishly, and to determine both trip current (IΔn) and trip time (tΔ) under standardized conditions.

A three‑LED wiring check confirms correct phase‑neutral‑earth connections before testing, enhancing operator safety. The integral phase‑angle selector (0°/180°) captures minimum and maximum trip times, while UL‑value selection (25 V/50 V) suspends testing if touch voltage exceeds safe limits. Over‑temperature detection halts tests and displays a warning if internal components overheat. Upon completion of each test, the display holds the result for three seconds before auto‑reset, and the instrument’s rugged housing with finger‑guards provides CAT III 300 V protection.
