The M48T35-70PC1 is a highly integrated monolithic chip that combines a 256 Kbit non-volatile static RAM with a full-featured real-time clock. This device is presented in a special 28-pin DIP package, known as a CAPHAT™, which uniquely contains the silicon chip, a quartz crystal, and a long-life lithium battery all within a single, self-contained unit.

The memory is organized as 32,768 words by 8 bits and operates like a standard byte-wide SRAM, allowing for easy integration into existing systems. Simultaneously, the integrated clock tracks time in a 24-hour format, automatically managing the complexities of date changes, including leap years. The timekeeping data is stored in BCD format within the upper eight memory locations of the SRAM array, making it accessible via simple read and write operations.

A key aspect of its design is the autonomous power-fail control circuit. This system continuously monitors the main 5V supply. If the voltage falls out of tolerance, the chip instantly write-protects the SRAM and seamlessly switches to the internal battery to preserve all data and maintain clock operation, ensuring data integrity through power interruptions.
