The MAX712CPE+ is a specialized integrated circuit designed to manage the fast charging of Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) and Nickel-Cadmium (NiCd) battery packs. It operates as a sophisticated controller that regulates the charging process from a DC power source, ensuring batteries are charged efficiently and safely. The chip is capable of handling battery configurations ranging from 1 to 16 cells connected in series, making it highly versatile for various battery-powered devices.
The primary role of the MAX712 is to conduct a constant-current fast-charge cycle, which can occur at rates as high as 4C. Its intelligent charging algorithm determines when the battery is fully charged by monitoring multiple parameters. Unlike the MAX713 which detects a negative voltage slope, the MAX712 is designed to terminate the fast charge upon detecting a zero voltage slope (∆V/∆t=0). It also incorporates temperature window comparators and a programmable timer as backup termination methods to prevent overcharging.
Housed in a standard 16-pin PDIP package, the device is powered through an on-board 5V shunt regulator from the DC input. It features a low-side current-sense resistor, allowing it to regulate the charge current even while simultaneously powering the system’s load from the same source. When not actively charging, the IC draws a minimal current of only 5µA from the battery, preserving its charge. It can be configured for either linear or more efficient switch-mode power control.
