SIM800L GSM / GPRS Module + External Antenna
The SIM800L is a miniature, quad-band GSM/GPRS module that allows you to add cellular connectivity to your electronic projects. It enables your device to connect to any global 2G GSM network to send and receive GPRS data, send and receive SMS messages, and make and receive voice calls.
At its core is the SIM800L chip from SIMCom, which operates on a flexible voltage range and is designed for low power consumption, making it suitable for various mobile and remote applications. Communication with the module is handled via a UART serial interface using standard AT commands.
Features
- Quad-Band Support: Operates on four GSM frequencies (GSM 850, EGSM 900, DCS 1800, and PCS 1900), allowing for global network compatibility.
- GPRS Data: Supports GPRS multi-slot class 12 (default) for connecting to the internet (TCP/IP, HTTP, etc.).
- Voice Calls: Capable of making and receiving voice calls. It includes audio interfaces for an external microphone and speaker.
- SMS Messaging: Fully supports sending and receiving SMS messages in Text and PDU modes.
- AT Command Control: All functions are controlled through a serial-based AT command set via a UART interface.
- Low Power Consumption: Features a power-saving sleep mode with a typical current consumption as low as 0.7mA.
- FM Radio: Includes support for scanning and receiving FM radio broadcasts.

Module Pinout
| Pin Name | Function Description |
| NET | Connects the helical antenna that comes with the module. |
| VCC | The power supply pin. The SIM800L needs between 3.4V and 4.4V (Do NOT connect directly to Arduino’s 5V or 3.3V outputs). |
| RST | Reset pin, used to restart the module (Pull this pin LOW for about 100 ms to perform a hard reset). |
| RxD (Receiver) | Receives commands sent to the module. Has “auto-baud detection.” |
| TxD (Transmitter) | Sends data from the module back to your microcontroller. |
| GND | The ground pin, which connects to the ground of your circuit. |
| RING | The Ring Indicator (‘interrupt-out’ pin). Can be configured to go LOW when a phone call or text message is received. |
| DTR | Controls the sleep mode. Pulling this pin HIGH enters sleep mode; pulling it LOW for about 50 ms wakes it up. |
| MIC± | Used for connecting an external microphone (differential microphone inputs). |
| SPK± | Used for connecting a speaker (differential speaker interfaces). |
