The TL16C750FN is an Asynchronous Communications Element (ACE), commonly known as a UART, which serves as a crucial interface between a parallel data bus and a serial communication channel. It performs serial-to-parallel conversion on data received from peripheral devices and parallel-to-serial conversion on data transmitted from its central processing unit (CPU). This device is a functional upgrade of earlier models, maintaining full software compatibility while introducing advanced features to reduce CPU overhead and enhance data integrity in serial communication systems.

A key advancement of the TL16C750FN is its integrated buffering system. It incorporates 64-byte FIFOs (First-In, First-Out) for both the receiver and transmitter sections. These FIFOs temporarily store data, allowing the CPU to handle data in blocks rather than on a character-by-character basis. This buffering significantly reduces the number of interrupts the CPU must service, thereby lowering software overhead and increasing overall system efficiency and performance in data-intensive applications.

To further optimize data flow and prevent data loss, the TL16C750FN features a programmable auto-flow control mechanism. This system is composed of auto-RTS (Request To Send) and auto-CTS (Clear To Send). Auto-RTS automatically desserts the RTS signal when the receiver FIFO is nearing capacity, signaling the transmitting device to pause. Conversely, auto-CTS halts the transmitter if the CTS signal is inactive, indicating the receiving device is not ready. This hardware-managed handshake eliminates overrun errors without CPU intervention.
