The ULN2004AN device is a high‑voltage, high‑current Darlington transistor array housed in a 16‑lead dual‑in‑line package. Internally, it comprises seven NPN Darlington pairs, each pre‑biased with series resistors and integrated clamp diodes to simplify interfacing and protect against inductive kick‑back when switching loads. By integrating the driver transistors, base resistors, and fly‑back diodes into a single monolithic IC, the ULN2004AN streamlines PCB design and reduces component count.

Each Darlington channel is rated for a collector‑emitter voltage of up to 50 V and can sink continuous currents of up to 500 mA. Channels may be paralleled to achieve higher aggregate current. The common‑cathode clamp diode arrangement allows up to seven inductive loads such as relays, solenoids, or lamps to share a single COM pin connection, simplifying power‑rail routing and ensuring robust suppression of back‑EMF.

The ULN2004AN variant features 10.5 kΩ series base resistors, optimizing its input‑current requirements for direct drive from 6 V to 15 V CMOS logic. Compared to the ULN2003A (2.7 kΩ) and ULN2002A (Zener‑protected) devices, the ULN2004AN draws less input current and operates at lower input voltages, making it ideal for modern microcontroller and DSP interfaces.
