The 74×06 (ex 74LS06) is a chip with six open-collector inverters that has a maximum output voltage of 30V and a sink current of 40 mA so that they can interface with high-level circuits (such as MOSFETs), or for driving high-current loads.
When you have an open collector output, it means it’s easy to connect it to other chips that use different logic levels. However, it also means you can’t just swap it out with a regular inverter chip.

How To Use This Chip
The 74LS06 comes in a 14-pin package, and you need to connect it to power before you can use it. Most 7400 ICs support a VCC voltage of 5V. One difference between the HC and LS versions of the chip is that the 74HC06 supports 2V to 6V, while the 74LS06 only supports 5V.
