Choosing a soldering station: quick rules
- For electronics, a temperature-controlled station is easier and safer for the parts than a plain iron: you set the heat once and get repeatable joints.
- Check tip availability before buying. Tip types are not interchangeable between systems (for example T12 and T210 are different): buy spare tips that match the exact model.
- Use flux and clean solder wire sized to the job: thinner wire for SMD and fine pitch, thicker wire for large pads and wires.
- Leaded and lead-free solder melt at different temperatures. Lead-free solder needs a higher temperature than tin-lead solder, so check the solder pack and set the station accordingly.
- A station that heats up fast and holds its temperature matters more than a high wattage number on the box.
- Solder in a ventilated place and do not breathe the flux fumes. Use a stand for the hot iron and keep it away from the cable.
