Choosing a multimeter: quick rules
- Choose True RMS if you measure AC on anything other than a clean sine wave (motor drives, dimmers, switching power supplies). A meter that is not True RMS can read wrong on those signals.
- Check the CAT safety rating and the voltage next to it (for example CAT III 600 V). Use a meter rated for the place you measure: mains panels need a higher category than a bench circuit.
- Pick the extras you will use: capacitance, frequency, temperature probe, backlight, data logging, USB or Bluetooth. Do not pay for functions you will not use.
- Auto-range is easier for beginners. Manual range is faster once you know the values you expect.
- For many readings in a row or for a signal that changes, a model with a bar graph or data logging helps.
- Never measure voltage with the leads in the current jack. Use the correct input jack and the fuse-protected range for each measurement.
