74162 Synchronous 4-Bit Counter IC

The 74162 is a synchronous 4-bit binary counter implemented in the TTL (LS) family. It provides four buffered outputs representing a 4-bit binary value and advances the count synchronously on a common clock edge when the enable inputs are asserted. The device supports parallel-loading of a preset value and a clear function, allowing designers to initialize or force any desired start count without ripple delays. Its internal gating makes all bit changes occur in the same clock transition, which simplifies timing in high-speed or cascaded counting applications.

Architecturally the IC includes parallel data inputs, active-low synchronous load and asynchronous clear pins, two enable inputs (for look-ahead expansion) and a ripple-carry / look-ahead output that lets multiple counters be cascaded for wider counters with predictable timing. Because counting is synchronous, hazards and glitches common to ripple counters are minimized; the outputs change in unison, so system timing and metastability are easier to manage.
