TIP147 Transistor Explained / Description:
TIP147 is a PNP Darlington transistor of the TIP14x series, there are other PNP transistors in this series which are TIP145, and TIP146. A Darlington transistor is a transistor that contains two similar transistors in a single package. These two transistors are connected in such a way that the output gain of the package will be greatly increased or multiplied which makes this transistor ideal to use in applications where the user wants to amplify the gain of the signal to a great extent but it also increases the noise with the signal which can be reduced by filter techniques, but these Darlington transistors are not only limited to use for increasing gain and they are also used for switching purposes and also perform well in these areas. Just as ordinary BJT transistors are available in different specifications, so are Darlington transistors available in different specifications.
Now back to the TIP147 transistor, the maximum collector current is -10A and the maximum collector-to-emitter voltage is 100V. The maximum DC gain is 500 to 1000 and the max collector dissipation is 125 watts.
All the PNP transistors in this series are almost identical to each other and as far as you are using them under 60V then you can use any of them. For higher than 60V you can use TIP141 and TIP142.
Where We Can Use It & How to Use:
The TIP147 transistor can be used for any general-purpose amplification and switching application that falls under its ratings. It can be used in a variety of high-power audio amplifier applications and also in output driving stages of audio amplifiers. Other than that it can also be used for switching purposes and it is capable of driving a load of up to -10A.
Applications:
- Audio amplifiers
- Audio amplifier output stages
- Drive load of up to -10A
- Motor Drivers
- And many other general-purpose applications
Safe Operating Guidelines / Absolute Maximum Ratings:
For safe operation of the transistor, we suggest always using it 20% below its absolute maximum ratings. The maximum collector current is -10A therefore do not drive a load of more than -8A, the maximum collector-to-emitter voltage is 100V so do not drive a load of more than 80V. Use a suitable heatsink with the transistor and always store or operate the transistor in temperatures above -65°C and below +150 °C.
