Which motion sensor do you need?

Sensor What it detects Output Good for
PIR (SR501, AM312, HC-SR505, SR-602) A change in infrared from a warm body moving in view Digital Lights, alarms and presence detection indoors
Microwave radar (RCWL-0516) Movement, using a microwave signal; it can sense through thin plastic or wood Digital Motion detection where a PIR sensor cannot see
Infrared beam detector (ABT series) Someone breaking an infrared beam over a long distance Digital (relay or contact) Perimeter and gate detection
IMU (MPU-6050) Rotation (gyroscope) and acceleration (accelerometer) on 3 axes each Digital (I2C) Balancing robots, drones, gesture and tilt measurement
Accelerometer (ADXL345) Acceleration and tilt on 3 axes Digital (I2C or SPI) Tilt, shock and vibration detection
Magnetometer (GY-271, GY-273) Magnetic field: a digital compass heading Digital (I2C) Compass and navigation projects
Hall sensor, reed switch A nearby magnet Digital or analog Door and window sensors, speed and position sensing
Tilt switch Whether the sensor is tilted Digital Simple tilt and orientation alarms
Rotary encoder Rotation steps and direction of a shaft Digital pulses Knobs, wheel counting and speed measurement

Quick rules

  • A PIR sensor needs a warm-up time after power-on, often a minute, and then holds its output high for a set delay. Many modules have two trimmers for sensitivity and delay.
  • A PIR sees heat that moves across its field of view. A person walking straight at the sensor can be detected later than one crossing in front of it.
  • A gyroscope drifts slowly over time. To get a stable angle from an MPU-6050, combine the gyroscope and the accelerometer data with a filter.
  • I2C sensors share two wires but each needs a different address. The MPU-6050 uses 0x68 or 0x69, set with its AD0 pin.
  • Some GY-271 compass modules carry a QMC5883L chip instead of the HMC5883L, and the two need different libraries. Check which chip your module has.
  • Keep a magnetometer away from motors, speakers, magnets and steel, which distort the reading.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a PIR sensor and a radar sensor?

A PIR sensor detects the infrared heat of a moving body in its field of view. A microwave radar sensor sends a signal and detects movement from the echo, so it can sense through thin plastic or wood, but it can also react to fans or vibrations.

Which is better for balancing a robot: the MPU-6050 or the ADXL345?

The MPU-6050 has a gyroscope and an accelerometer in one chip, which is what a balancing robot needs. The ADXL345 is an accelerometer only.

Why does my PIR sensor trigger by itself?

Check that it has finished its warm-up, that its power supply is steady, and that it is not facing a heater, a window with sunlight or an air conditioner. Lowering the sensitivity on the module can also help.

Do you deliver motion sensors across Egypt?

Yes. Orders to Alexandria placed before 2:00 PM are usually delivered the same day, and orders to other governorates are usually delivered the next day. These are typical times, not a guarantee. Shipping cost depends on the governorate and is shown at checkout. See Shipping and Delivery.

Can I return motion sensors?

Electronic products cannot be returned or exchanged once opened or used, except for confirmed manufacturing defects. Defects must be reported within 3 days of delivery. Full rules: Refund and Returns Policy.

Do you sell motion sensors in bulk to schools, universities or companies?

Yes. Contact customer service on +2 0248813824, WhatsApp +20 121 198 1188 or info@makerselectronics.com and you will be connected to the corporate customers team.

Can I visit the store?

Yes: 158 Elhorya St., Elibrahymia, Alexandria, Egypt. Saturday to Thursday 10:00 AM to 8:30 PM, Friday 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
