The 74HC4040D is a high-speed, CMOS-level 12-stage binary ripple counter featuring a clock input (CP), twelve parallel outputs (Q0 to Q11), and an overriding asynchronous master reset input (MR). The internal state of the counter advances sequentially on the HIGH-to-LOW (negative edge) transition of the clock input. Activating the master reset input with a HIGH voltage level clears all counter stages and completely forces all parallel outputs LOW, operating independently of the clock’s state. Each individual counter stage is constructed as a static toggle flip-flop. Built-in clamp diodes on the inputs allow the safe utilization of current-limiting resistors, enabling the chip to cleanly interface with signal voltages that exceed the positive supply line ().
