LM392N Comparator IC DIP-8

The LM392N is a versatile monolithic integrated circuit that contains two independent building blocks: a high-gain operational amplifier and a precision voltage comparator. This combination provides two essential analog functions in a single 8-pin package, simplifying circuit design and reducing component count. Both circuits are specifically engineered to operate efficiently from a single power supply, making them highly practical for a wide range of applications.

A key characteristic of the LM392N is its ability to operate from a single power supply over a wide voltage range, from 3V to 32V, eliminating the need for dual positive and negative supplies in many designs. The input stages of both the op-amp and the comparator are designed to common-mode down to ground level. This allows the device to sense input signals at or near the ground potential, which is a significant advantage when interfacing with sensors or signals referenced to ground in a single-supply system.

The operational amplifier is internally frequency compensated for unity gain stability and offers a wide output voltage swing. The comparator features a low output saturation voltage, ensuring its output is compatible with various logic families, including TTL and CMOS, without requiring additional interface components. Furthermore, the device exhibits a low supply current drain that remains largely independent of the supply voltage, making it exceptionally suitable for battery-operated and other power-sensitive portable equipment.
